Kamloops firefighters had to think fast this morning when their pumps froze while fighting a vehicle fire — they had to douse the fire with snow.

Kamloops Fire Rescue was called just before noon on Dec. 27 to a report of a burning vehicle at a home on the 2200 block of Valleyview Drive.

Platoon captain Chris Petula said the first engine to show up was travelling from Dallas after another call, so it hadn't had a chance to return to the station.

Once they arrived, firefighters tried to hook up to a nearby hydrant but the engine's pump was frozen, leaving firefighters to use fire extinguishers and shovel snow onto the burning truck.

A second engine arrived to help the firefighters who were already on the scene, and that truck was able to use its pump and douse the flames. Petula said the damage was largely restricted to the vehicle, rather than the nearby house.

"It was mostly the truck fire, but it melted some vinyl siding on the house," Petula said. "The truck will steam for a bit now."

By 1 p.m., crews had returned to the station and they did not expect the fire to flare up again.
