Small pets victims in Kelowna duplex fire

No one was home in a duplex that had a kitchen fire in Kelowna yesterday afternoon but small pets perished in the blaze.

The pets included Geckos, birds and hamsters and they did not survive the fire in the 400 block of Wigglesworth Crescent at about 3:18 p.m. yesterday, Nov. 5, according to a Kelowna Fire Department news release.

"Initial crews found a two story duplex residence with light black smoke coming from a second story window," Platoon Capt. Kelly Stephens said in the release. "The fire crews found a kitchen fire and extinguished the flames, unfortunately not before extensive damage occurred to residence."

There was little damage to the adjacent unit in the duplex.

No one was at home in either residence.

The cause of the fire is not considered suspicious but fire investigators are looking into the cause.
