Slide in Kelowna's Mission Creek park closes three trails

A slide seen on the hill above the Mission Creek spawning channel in Kelowna's Mission Creek Regional Park, Wednesday, March 13, 2019, is marked with red tape and is well back from the main trail.

KELOWNA - A slide that prompted the regional district to close three trails in Mission Creek Regional Park is far away from the main trail along the dike and not easily seen by those jogging or walking next to the creek.

The slide is about half a kilometre upstream from the bridge crossing Mission Creek near the Environmental Education Centre For The Okanagan or EECO.

It’s south of the spawning channel and trails nearby are still covered with snow. A red caution tape is strung between about four large trees below the slide, which brought down a few trees on the steep slope.

People walking and jogging past the site said they did not notice the tape in the woods.

“Until slope stability can be assessed, the regional district urges park users to respect the barricades and trail closed signs,” Parks Services operations manager Brad Ackerman said in a news release from the Regional District of the Central Okanagan.

No debris got into the spawning channel and the slide is being monitored daily, regional district communications officer Bruce Smith said in the release.
