Sleeping driver in Kamloops awakened by officers, hits cop cars

Kamloops RCMP are investigating after a driver asleep at the wheel in a parked SUV was woken up by officers and proceeded to hit two cop cars during her escape.

Officers were called at around 12:40 p.m. Saturday, July 10, about a suspicious silver SUV parked and idling for 45 minutes on Crosshill Drive, according to an RCMP media release.

Arriving officers noticed the SUV had a stolen licence plate and a woman was slumped over the wheel.

The woman woke up and rammed the police car in front of the SUV and the one behind before speeding off toward the Aberdeen neighbourhood, taking out some fence on the way.

“Neither officer was injured and no new damage was noted to their police vehicles,” Kamloops RCMP interim media relations officer Const. Crystal Evelyn said in the release.

Police have a suspect and the investigation is ongoing, Const. Evelyn said.

Anyone who witnessed the event or has information related to it is asked to contact the Kamloops RCMP and reference file number 2021-23315.
