Only a dummy would launch themselves off the giant ramp at Apex Mountain Resort.

And about 10 to 20 of them are expected to do so this afternoon for the annual Dummy Downhill event.

“They hit an aerial site kicker – a big jump – and they literally go 60 vertical feet in the air before they land,” general manager James Shalman said.

“Then they blow up on landing… there’s always a big explosion at the bottom.”

It’s the highest flying dummy downhill in the world, he said.

Some dummies do straight nosedives while others perform backflips.

“All sorts of different things – it all depends on how the dummy takes off of the jump.”

The Downhill Dummy takes place every year on the last weekend of the season.

Anybody who wants to participate better hurry as registration opens at noon and the event starts at 1 p.m. It’s free to enter and to watch – not even a lift ticket is required. Dummies must weigh less than 250 pounds.

The temperature was around minus 5 degrees Celsius this morning at Apex, he said, and it’s expected to warm up to 2 or 3 degrees this afternoon, which is a recipe for “beautiful spring skiing.”
