Ski resort employees fired after attending large party at Big White bar

Big White

Big White Ski Resort has fired two employees after they were found partying in a bar with a large group of people without masks or social distancing measures in place.

The party, shown in a video posted on social media, was held March 29 and began at roughly 6:30 p.m. at Charley Victoria's All Day Après, said resort senior vice president Michael Ballingall.

“We’re disgusted, embarrassed, ashamed that this is even associated with our mountain. This is a blatant disregard for the law and the provincial health officers orders,” he said. “This operator decided to put his alcohol and food on sale for 50% off and invite the staff to attend.”

The resort received multiple complaints about the party including from those inside the restaurant, he said. The RCMP were called at 7 p.m. and they attended just after 9 p.m.

“We are doing everything we can to identify people who are in the video and breaking the provincial health officer’s orders and if we identify any of our staff members, they’re in breach of their social contract and they’ll be terminated,” he said.

Two people have already been fired, he said.

Public health orders currently do not allow social gatherings indoors and restaurants and bars can only be open for take-out options.

Charley Victoria's, Kelowna RCMP and WorkSafeBC did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
