Sinkhole creates traffic headache on Hospital Hill in Vernon

A water main break created a huge sinkhole on Highway 97 across from Vernon Jubilee Hospital last night and the traffic impacts will be felt for the rest of the week.

There was single-lane alternating traffic on Highway 97 between 16 Avenue and 28 Avenue following the water main break at around 10 p.m. yesterday, April 26, according to DriveBC.

The northbound lanes remained closed for hours impacting traffic in both directions, between the hospital and Highway 6.

The City says in a media release the main was repaired overnight but the highway was significantly damaged by the large volume of water and crews continue to work to fix the roadway.

The majority of the work should be done by the end of the week and during the construction northbound traffic will be rerouted to the southbound side of the highway for two single lanes, one in each direction.

To access the hospital until the road is fixed, the City is recommending drivers turn east onto 18 Avenue and then north onto 31A or 31 Street.
