A single mom of two in Salmon Arm won a new ride that will change her life for the better.

Canoe resident Katy Ackerman was nominated for the prize, awarded for the third year by Kal Tire, Braby Motors, Fix Auto Collision and SASCU Financial Group.

“It couldn’t go to a better person,” Kathy Forsyth, Ackerman's nominator and friend, said in a media release. “She’s amazingly kind, compassionate, and generous, even though she herself doesn’t have much.”

Ackerman and her children Ella, 4, and Emery, 2, were presented with a refurbished 2015 Chrysler 200 including winter and summer tires, $1,500 in vehicle insurance, plus fuel cards and other gifts, Dec. 18.

Ackerman is a full-time mom and a full-time student using the night hours to train online to become a Certified Education Assistant.

“This gift will help me start a new life,” Ackerman said in the release. “It puts to rest so many questions I had, like how I was going to get to my practicum this spring.”

Ackerman is a full-time mom and a full-time student using the night hours to train online to become a Certified Education Assistant. She is taking her practicum ay North Canoe Elementary, and without a car, the odds of getting job placement after she finished her program were slim.

“This is a mom who is working really hard for a better future for her young family despite some pretty bad luck over recent months,” Dan Burt, General Manager of Kal Tire, said in the release.

A few weeks before Christmas, the sponsors put out a call to the Shuswap community to nominate someone who would be significantly impacted by a new vehicle. The winning story is selected by a committee of sponsors.

“Choosing among the stories sent in is really difficult,” Derick Miller, General Manager of Fix Auto, said in the release. “We feel really proud that we can make a difference in one more of these families’ lives.”
