Shuswap ranked sixth in top 50 most-loved Canadian tourism destinations

The Shuswap region was ranked in the top ten most-loved Canadian tourist destinations in 2021.

The Tourism Sentiment Index placed the Shuswap at number six out of its top 50 Canadian destinations.

“This report shows that the Shuswap offers a unique, four-season experience that clearly inspires affection in the hearts of our guests,” Morgen Matheson of Shuswap Tourism said in a Columbia Shuswap Regional District news release.

The Tourism Sentiment Index studies online conversations and content of tourism data to reflect the top-rated destinations across the world. The key driver for the Shuswap region rating was fishing.

“As a destination-marketing organization, we are thrilled to see the Shuswap recognized so highly amongst other tourism communities from around the country,” Matheson said.

Elsewhere in the region, Kelowna landed itself in the fourth spot, with wineries and vineyards a top tourism driver, according to the top 50 report. The Okanagan and Similkameen regions placed eleventh and thirteenth, respectively. Also included in the Canadian top 50 were Kamloops at 48, Revelstoke at 39 and Vernon at 36.

Richmond landed in the number Canadian destination where air travel was the top driver, according to the report.

In its top 100 list of world destinations, the Shuswap took the second last spot at 99, ahead of tied Antwerp, Belgium and Pensacola, Florida.

The index is a marketing tool intended to better understand how consumers feel about a destination, and its 2021 study observed more than 21,300 and 1.6 billion "online conversations," the regional district said.

Out of the tens of thousands of locations, 195 Canadian destinations were part of the study.
