Shuswap boy gets birthday message from Deadpool star

A nine-year-old Shuswap boy has received birthday wishes from a Hollywood star.

In the personal video message, Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds wishes Damien Smith happy birthday, telling the nine year old he can relate to his story.

Smith's story made headlines a month ago, after his mom, Tiffany Trudell posted to social media asking for birthday wishes for her son, who had told her he wasn't looking forward to his birthday as he was, "just going to be lonely."

A recent move for the family from the Lower Mainland to the Shuswap, combined with the pandemic, had left the birthday boy struggling with the isolation.

While Trudell had thought her social media posts might garner a few cards, her message had a far wider appeal. Ultimately it landed on the desk of Ryan Reynolds after Damien had said he was a huge Deadpool fan.

"Damien, it's Ryan I heard about your story... I heard you're a big fan of Deadpool, I am too," Reynolds says in the birthday video. "I relate to your story a lot because I also went to a new school when I was a kid... and I remember how alienating that felt, and I remember how alone I felt."

Reynolds sent the birthday message weeks ago, and Trudell previously told iNFOnews.ca she'd watched it over and over. She was, however, keeping it under wraps from Damien until his birthday. Now Trudell has posted Reynolds's message complete with Damien's reaction for everyone to see.
