NORTH OKANAGAN - The province is being pressured to hold a byelection in the North Okanagan-Shuswap School District.
The B.C. School Trustees Association says in a letter to the Minister of Education it is “puzzled” that School District 83 was not included in a recent announcement for a byelection in Vancouver.
“On behalf of the BCSTA, and our membership, we call on you to set a date for byelections in the North Okanagan-Shuswap district so that we may see parity across the province,” the association says in the letter dated Aug. 8.
The North Okanagan-Shuswap school board was fired last year and former Surrey school district superintendent Mike McKay was appointed official trustee by the province.
McKay has previously said he would stay until the regularly scheduled elections in 2018, or as long as the province wishes him to remain.
The association is calling on the government to set a date for a byelection in the North Okanagan-Shuswap prior to the October 2018 general election.
“We firmly believe that communities are best served by democratically elected, local boards of education, and request that you act on this imbalance as soon as possible,” the association says.
