Shoplifter caught by off-duty cop in Kamloops

A shoplifter was thwarted by an off-duty police officer in Kamloops as she attempted to leave a store with a shopping cart of items.

The RCMP officer watched her leave the Valleyview store on Jan. 2, around 2:20 p.m., as she pushed the cart of allegedly unpaid items out the door, according to a Kamloops RCMP news release.

He followed her outside and, with the assistance of a security guard, arrested her and waited for an on-duty officer to arrive at the location on the 2000 block of East Trans Canada Highway.

“This is a great example of police officers living and working in the community, and doing their part to help keep it safe, in and out of uniform,” Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Const. Crystal Evelyn said in the release.

A small amount of drugs was seized as part of the investigation and the woman was released with a court date, according to RCMP.
