Interior Health's former chief medical health officer is going to trial in Alberta next year on sexual assault charges.
Dr. Albert Stefanus de Villiers' trial is scheduled for Jan. 10 to Jan. 12, 2023, in Grand Prairie. He's also scheduled for a pre-trial conference that is set to begin on Oct. 21.
The charges of sexual assault and sexual interference, according to court documents, are for events that allegedly took place between June 15, 2018, and July 31, 2020, near Grande Prairie.
The information for the charges allege Dr. de Villiers sexually touched a person under 16 years old between June 15, 2018 and July 31, 2020. He was charged, then arrested in Kelowna on June 8, 2021.
Dr. de Villiers previously worked out of Grande Prairie in the Alberta Health Services north zone before taking on the role of Interior Health's chief medical health officer in August 2020.
On June 9, 2021, the day after his arrest, Interior Health replaced Dr. de Villiers with Dr. Sue Pollock as the health authority's chief medical health officer.
