KAMLOOPS - The former fire chief of a North Thompson town will spend seven months behind bars for possessing child pornography.

Al Kirkwood of Barriere pleaded guilty last year to one count of possession of child pornography, after an extensive RCMP investigation.

Court documents show Kirkwood was sentenced today, Jan. 18, in Kamloops Provincial Court. He was given a seven-month sentence, along with an 18-month probation order.

He must also register as a sex offender for the next 10 years.

The allegations against Kirkwood came to light after an RCMP investigation. Police originally said in November 2016 that the B.C. RCMP's Integrated Child Exploitation unit began an investigation in August of that year, after the United States National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children, along with its Canadian counterpart, had turned over several "concerning reports."

He was arrested in Barriere on Oct. 8, 2016 and formally charged Nov. 4. RCMP executed several search warrants in the Barriere and Clearwater areas.

Police said at the time they did not find any evidence to suggest any local children were directly victimized.
