Semi driver killed in rollover on Highway 5 near Vavenby

VAVENBY - A truck driver from Surrey was killed when his tractor-trailer rolled on Highway 5 near Vavenby earlier this week.

Clearwater RCMP say the crash happened at approximately 7 a.m., Tuesday, April 17, on Highway 5 near Vavenby.

The driver, a man for Surrey, was the only one in the truck when it rolled on a curve into the ditch, according to an RCMP media release. The truck was pulling a 53-foot trailer loaded with peat moss.

The man was dead when police arrived at the scene of the crash. RCMP are not releasing his identity, but say his family has been notified.

Weather conditions were not a factor and there was no evidence of drug or alcohol impairment, police say.

The highway was temporarily closed to traffic on Tuesday.

RCMP are asking anyone who may have witnessed a black Volvo semi-truck with a white trailer heading southbound on Highway 5 between Blue River and Vavenby before 7 a.m. on April 17 to call Central Interior Traffic Services at 250-674-2237 and quote file number 2018-1615.
