Semi crashes into highway maintenance truck on Trans-Canada near Golden

An Emcon highway maintenance vehicle was rear-ended by a semi-truck this week, something that happens roughly twice a year in B.C., according to the company’s president of operations.

The truck was hit by a semi after it stopped to assist a motorist Wednesday, Nov. 18. It had its lights flashing while helping a driver on the Trans-Canada Highway east of Golden.

“We don’t know how the truck driver drove into the back of it with all the bright lights and whatnot, but it happens,” said Dustin Khadikin, vice president of operations with the B.C. division. “We maintain highways across three provinces. It happens in Ontario fairly regularly and in B.C. I would say this is the second occurrence like this year, we had the one in Golden and one on Vancouver Island.”

The driver of the maintenance truck was not injured.

The slowdown and move over legislation for emergency responders also applies to highway maintenance workers, he said.

“Originally road maintenance contractors were not included in the legislation,” he said.

He asks that motors leave space for the vehicle in front of them and to check road conditions by using Drive BC.
