Second COVID-19 outbreak at the Okanagan Correctional Centre in Oliver

An inmate at the Okanagan Correctional Centre has launched a civil suit against the B.C. Ministry of Justice after he allegedly slipped and fell on a freshly mopped floor.

There have been 78 new COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours in B.C, including three at the Okanagan Correctional Centre in Oliver that has been now classed as an outbreak.

All three are staff members, and the facility is being monitored by healthcare workers, provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry said today, Aug. 13, during a COVID-19 update.

There was an outbreak at the prison earlier in the pandemic which was contained.

There are now 4,274 people in B.C. who have been diagnosed with COVID-19, including, 2,242 in the Fraser Health region, 1,306 in the Vancouver Coastal region, 398 in the Interior Health region (up four from yesterday), 153 in the Vancouver Island region, 106 in the Northern Health region and 72 amongst non-residents.

There were no new deaths, leaving that total at 196, but there are 578 active cases with nine people in hospital and four in intensive care.

There have been 3,500 people who have recovered but there are currently 1,878 people who are in isolation.

Dr. Henry pointed out the number of younger people, in their 20s and 30s, with COVID-19 is growing significantly.
