Barriere RCMP continue to investigate an apparent abduction of a child that occurred on Friday afternoon.

Police say the incident took place on Friday, Nov. 22, at approximately 3:30 p.m. in the area of Barriere Town Road and Dunn Lake Road, according to an RCMP news release.

The 10-year-old girl was walking on Dunn Lake Road when she was reportedly approached by an unknown man. Police say the man allegedly grabbed the girl by the wrist and she fought back, freeing herself and then ran off.

The man is described as approximately 40 years of age, 5’7” tall, hazel eyes, brown short hair and a brown full beard approximately four inches in length shaped to a point at the end.

“A police service dog was brought to the scene to search for the suspect and officers have spoken with local residents regarding the incident,” Barriere RCMP Cpl. Rob Welsman says in the release.

Police are asking for the public to remain extra vigilant. Parents are encouraged to discuss safety protocols with their children and closely monitor their actions as the RCMP continues its investigation.

As a result of the incident, some youth events were cancelled in the area at the discretion of the organizers, RCMP say. School officials have been notified of the incident and are working closely with investigators.

RCMP have canvassed local residents in the surrounding area following up on tips they have received from the general public. Patrols are being made and all possible investigative avenues are being explored, police say.

Anyone in the area with video surveillance or dashboard camera footage is asked to contact Barriere RCMP detachment at 250-672-9918.
