After searching the waters off a popular Shuswap beach for hours yesterday, emergency crews were unable to find a 22-year-old Edmonton man who is now presumed drowned.
The man was swimming at Canoe Beach on Shuswap Lake Thursday, July 23, and Shuswap Search and Rescue volunteers received the call at 2:30 p.m.
"He was swimming out to a dock, and I don’t know exactly what happened," Shuswap Search and Rescue search manager John Schut said. "There was apparently a cry for help, one of his friends tried to save him but he couldn’t hold him anymore."
Both Search and Rescue and the RCMP had crews on the water until 9 p.m. yesterday.
"The RCMP dive team was also there, but the water is very murky and it’s difficult to see," Schut said.
The search is ongoing today and the RCMP dive team is involved.
