School district looks to bolster French Immersion in the Central Okanagan

French Immersion program in the Cental Okanagan school district continues to grow.

CENTRAL OKANAGAN - French Immersion could soon be offered to more West Kelowna students.

Central Okanagan school trustees are considering a recommendation from staff that the district commit to full K-12 French Immersion on the Westside.

In a report to the board, assistant superintendents Rhonda Ovelson and Rick Oliver recommend the creation of Grade 4 middle-entry French Immersion at either Hudson Road or Rose Valley elementary schools.

Glenrosa Middle would become a dual-track French Immersion school, while a location for a secondary school program would be determined by a capital projects assessment.

Bolstering French Immersion on the Westside would make access to the program more equitable for famlies living in West Kelowna and Peachland, the report notes.

While the report makes a specific recommendation, it is one of three possible scenarios and related costs for trustees to consider, all previously vetted for inclusion at the sub-committee level.

The recommended option would have an incremental program cost of $120,000, the cheapest of the three scenarios and half the price of the most expensive.

Central Okanagan school district trustees have been struggling for some time over what to do with the popular French Immersion program.

The school district serves over 23,000 students at 44 schools in the Central Okanagan.
