The driver of a school bus with children onboard was caught going over the speed limit in a Kelowna school zone this week.
RCMP officers with traffic services were patrolling school zones in Kelowna this week as students returned to class, according to an RCMP media release.
An officer with a speed detector recorded the privately owned and operated school bus driving above the posted speed limit of 30 km/h, RCMP said. The bus was taking students to a local private school and was not operated by the Central Okanagan school district.
Police said while it isn’t unusual for drivers to forget school zones are back in effect this time of year, finding a marked yellow school bus with children onboard speeding through a school zone is. RCMP didn't say how fast the bus was going.
The bus was stopped and the driver handed a written warning. The bus driver’s supervisor was also contacted by police.
“A bus driver who we trust with the safety of our children who blatantly disregard that responsibility is shocking and disappointing to all us,” Kelowna RCMP media relations officer Const. Mike Della-Paolera said in the release.
RCMP are reminding drivers that the 30 km/h speed limit in school zones is in effect from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on school days.
