Sawdust insulation makes Kelowna house fire difficult to fight

KELOWNA – Crews had their hands full with a house fire near downtown Kelowna late last night.

Kelowna Fire Department Platoon Capt. Tim Light says in a media release firefighters were called to a house in the 1800 block of Abbott Street just before midnight, Oct. 26, and found smoke coming from the rear of the home.

While the fire on the back deck and roof was quickly put out, it was tough to completely extinguish the blaze because of the sawdust insulation in the older home.

“Damage to the structure is extensive but the house was vacant at the time of the fire,” Light says in the release.

Investigators are on the scene today looking for the cause of the fire, he says.
