Salmon barbecue cooking contest coming to Kamloops this summer

A salmon barbecue festival will be joining this year's Hot Nite in the City. The event is the first of its kind, according to event organizers.

KAMLOOPS — A new barbecue festival will be hitting the streets of downtown Kamloops this summer.

To celebrate 25 years of Hot Nite in the City, committee members will be organizing the city's first Thompson River Salmon BBQ Festival Competition, according to Elena Markin who has been working closely with the Hot Nite in the City committee.

The event will be held on Saturday, Aug. 10 in the parking lot of The Plaza Hotel. The parking space will be turned into a salmon barbecue cook off venue where five to six contestants will compete in two categories to win prizes. There will also be a People's Choice Award, Markin says.

For a small fee, Markin says, the public will be able to taste a variety of barbecue salmon samples to find out which one is their favourite.

"We are absolutely thrilled by the support of the community for this brand new event to us," Ron Johnson with the Hot Nite in the City Society says in the release.

Hot Nite in the City is an annual show and shine car show in downtown Kamloops. Several blocks are closed off downtown to allow various types of vehicles. This year's car show will take place on Saturday, Aug. 10 and Sunday, Aug. 11.
