Salmon Arm student detained following threatening social media post

SALMON ARM - A high school student was detained by the RCMP earlier today after allegedly making a threatening social media post.

School District 83 spokesperson Alice Hucul says the district learned this morning, June 14, from the RCMP that a student who attended Salmon Arm Secondary had made the threat.

“The RCMP and school staff quickly determined the location of the student and the student was detained by RCMP,” Hucul says. “No weapons were found at the time. The incident is being taken very seriously and the school district safety procedures and protocols are being followed.”

Salmon Arm RCMP Staff Sgt. Scott West says in a media release, once made aware of the potential threat, police worked with the school districts in Kelowna and Salmon Arm to identify the source.

West says the student was unarmed and under the age of 18.

“At this time there is no further known threat to student safety in Salmon Arm as a result of this social media threat,” West says in the release.

Hucul couldn’t say what the post stated or describe the nature of the threat. The high school was not locked down at any point.

“The safety of our students is always our top priority. The school district is committed to providing a safe learning environment for our students.

Thank you to BC RCMP and the Sullivan Campus staff for their quick and professional response,” Hucul says.
