Salmon Arm RCMP catch thief in stolen Alberta pickup truck

Salmon Arm RCMP have arrested a man who was found in possession of a stolen vehicle and handgun on Christmas Eve.

Officers responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle in the 3500 block of Lakeshore Road Northeast on Dec. 24 at around 4 p.m., according to a Salmon Arm RCMP news release.

Police say a local resident located a man in a Ford F-350 pickup truck who had become stuck on his property. When officers arrived the man tried to power out of the deep snow and the vehicle became immobilized.

Officers say the man tried to flee the area and began throwing items in the snow.

“The attending officers located and arrested the male after determining the truck had been stolen from a work site in Alberta,” Salmon Arm RCMP Staff Sgt. Scott West says in the release.

Police continued to investigate and called in a police dog from Vernon to search the items the man threw as he tried to escape. Police located a semi-automatic handgun and later determined it was stolen in 2016 from Evansburg, Alta.

The suspect is now in custody and has an extensive criminal record. He has been charged with possession of a stolen truck, possession of a stolen gun and number of other charges stemming from a number of court-ordered prohibitions including a driving prohibition and being prohibited from being in possession of any guns as a result of four previous drug convictions.
