Two Rust Valley Restorers stars are using their celebrity to raise money for the Shuswap Hospice Society next month.

The 'Rasta Blasta' Mike Hall and his buddy Avery Shoaf first exchanged their work boots for dancing shoes in 2019 when they competed in Dancing with the Shuswap Stars fundraiser. That year Hall performing the foxtrot while Shoaf did the cha cha. Neither of them placed in the competition but the event brought in close to $50,000 thanks to the increased media attention.

This year the Rust Valley Restorers stars will judging the contestants.

Tracy Hughes is the communications coordinator for the Columbia Shuswap Regional District and a volunteer for the fifth annual fundraiser, which happens virtually on Nov. 19 this year.

“Mike and Avery don't know much about dancing but they do know about performing and being in front of a camera,” Hughes said. “They were very entertaining the last time and we are all anxious to hear their comments. This is less about dancing and more about entertaining.”

The event started five years ago and mimics the ABC television show Dancing with the Stars, where celebrities learn how to ballroom dance and then perform.

Hughes said the event was cancelled last year due to COVID so there is a bigger need to bring in money for the hospice this year.

“This year we are back and we decided not to do an in-person dancing gala so we are doing a live streamed version which people can buy a ticket for and view online,” she said. “It has been a well-supported and sold out event and we are hoping that people will embrace this unusual format.”

Hughes said five couples will be competing against each other and viewers can purchase stars and vote for their favourites through the website. Stars can be purchased for five dollars with all proceeds going to the hospice.

“We have posted take out options from our local restaurants on our site hoping viewers will make an evening of it and enjoy themselves,” Hughes said. “We have a junior category of performers we will be posting videos of. There is a big prize for our winning couple.”
