Rockets defeat Vancouver Giants 6-4

The Kelowna Rockets defeated the Vancouver Giants 6-4 Friday night in Langley.

KELOWNA - The Kelowna Rockets defeated the Vancouver Giants 6-4 Friday night in Langley in a wild special teams affair.

Vancouver struck first seven minutes into the contest, but three minutes later Calvin Thurkauf scored his seventh of the season to even the score. Shortly after that Nick Merkley extended his goal streak to four games putting the Rockets ahead. Vancouver tied the game 2-2 late in the period.

Tomas Soustal scored his seventh shorthanded midway through the period. Just three seconds later Braydyn Chizen put the Rockets up 4-2 on a shot from his own blue line that caught Vancouver goaltender Ryan Kubic off guard. With five minutes to go in the frame Alec Bear scored his second of the night to pull the Giants within one at 4-3

After Vancouver tied it in the third Kole Lind put home his seventh. Nick Merkley put home his second of the night into the empty net late to seal it for the Rockets.

Michael Herringer collected his ninth win on the season stopping 30 of 34 shots he faced. The Rockets outshot the Giants 37-34.

The Rockets improve to 10-8-0-0 on the season.

Kelowna was 2-for-4 on the power play. They were also perfect on the PK going 5-for-5 and scoring two shorthanded goals.

The Rockets are back at it tomorrow night when they take on the Medicine Hat Tigers at Prospera Place.
