Rockets beat Cougars 5-2

KELOWNA - The Kelowna Rockets defeated the Prince George Cougars 5-2 on Saturday night at Prospera Place.

The Cougars got on the board first as Colby McAuley beat Michael Herringer. Tomas Soustal drew the boys even before the period was out finishing a nice passing play between Nick Merkley, Nolan Foote, and himself. 1-1 after 20 minutes.

Devante Stephens extended his goal scoring lead among Rockets defenceman with his 10th to pull Kelowna ahead by one. James Hilsendager added another for the Rockets on a seeing-eye-shot from the point. The Rockets offence didn't quit as Nick Merkley went on a shorthanded breakaway and slipped one past Cougars tender Nick McBride. 4-1 was the score after two periods of play.

The Cougars stopped the bleeding 41 seconds into the final frame as Colby McAuley scored his second of the night but that was it for scoring on the Prince George side. Calvin Thurkauf scored his team leading 30th of the season on the empty net to seal it for the Rockets. 5-2 final.

Michael Herringer improves to 25-13-3-0 so far this season.

The Rockets record climbs to 34-20-5-0 on the year.

The Rockets finish up their four game home stand when they host the Edmonton Oil Kings on Wednesday, February 22nd.
