Risk of severe thunderstorms in Thompson-Nicola tomorrow

The historic ridge of high pressure responsible for the heat wave in the B.C. Interior is on the move and that could produce severe thunderstorms in the Thompson-Nicola region tomorrow.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement warning of the potential for severe thunderstorms with very strong wind gusts, intense lighting and brief bursts of heavy rain tomorrow, June 30.

This after an intense heat wave that broke all-time Canadian high temperature records in the same region, and after a spring largely devoid of precipitation.

An upper trough will move across the Interior resulting in isolated to scattered thunderstorms from Fort Nelson to Merritt, the statement reads.

Meteorologists say the main threats will be very strong wind gusts and intense lightning, while some area could see bursts of heavy rain.
