CAWSTON - Growth of the wildfire burning in the Similkameen has slowed, as burning conditions settled down somewhat overnight.

B.C. Wildfire fire information officer Ashlene Aktarian says the fire experienced limited growth overnight and is now about 400 hectares in size. Fire activity is limited to a smouldering ground fire this morning, July 29, with little smoke.

There are 145 firefighters battling the blaze on the ground, along with heavy equipment, eight helicopters and additional air support if needed, Aktarian says. Attempts are being made to build fireguards around the fire’s northeast portions.

An incident management team is now in place as well. The fire was first sighted on Wednesday, July 24, and is believed to have been lightning-caused.

Nearby traffic on Highway 3 may be affected by the wildfire. Motorists should be aware of falling rock and debris on the road.

No structures are under immediate threat. As of 3:45 p.m., an evacuation alert for 10 Similkameen properties was rescinded.

A smoky skies bulletin issued by Interior Health for the Similkameen, including Princeton, but it was cancelled today.

The postponed Mount Kobau Star Party is going ahead today now that fire risk is lower than when it was originally scheduled on Saturday. The astronomical event takes place on the mountain next to Richter. Those interested in updates should check the Facebook page here.
