A 34-year-old Richmond man has been charged with 11 crimes related to a home invasion in which suspects made off with $10 million in cryptocurrency.
In September 2022, multiple armed suspects invaded a home in Richmond to steal cryptocurrency and luxury items, according to a press release from RCMP on Nov. 23.
Some of the suspects impersonated police officers, gained entry to the home where they assaulted, bound and held the couple living there for several hours. The victims suffered non-life-threatening injuries but were extremely shaken up.
The Serious Crimes Unit and Economic Crime Unit took over the investigation and more than a year later the BC Prosecution Service has approved 11 charges against Jin Da Xing.
“Our Serious Crimes Unit and Economic Crime Unit... have done an exceptional job with the investigation, leading to an arrest with many very serious charges, and the recovery of the bulk of the stolen $10 million in cryptocurrency,” Chief Supt. Dave Chauhan, Richmond RCMP, said in the release.
RCMP said it was prepared for this type of complex and lengthy investigation.
“There have been many technological breakthroughs through the last five to 10 years in the digital forensics field. It has taken time and resources to mobilize and establish this type of expertise. I am proud to say that we saw the need for this type of expertise in the past and hedged towards the future,” Chief Supt. Chauhan said.
Xing has been charged with break and enter to a dwelling house, robbery with a weapon, unlawful confinement, using an imitation firearm while committing robbery, assault with a weapon, extortion, assault, possession of stolen property over $5,000 and impersonating a peace officer.
Xing is in custody awaiting trial.
