Browns gets $5M grant to help catalogue, move museum pieces

Original Publication Date February 08, 2019 - 7:31 AM

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Brown University has received a $5 million grant that will allow the Ivy League school to fully catalogue the collection at its anthropology museum in anticipation of a move closer to campus.

The grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation will enable the Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology to create an accurate inventory of nearly one million artifacts, which are currently housed in Bristol.

Relocation to a to-be-determined site near the Providence campus will unite the museum's collections, boost public access, and create new opportunities for scholarship in anthropology, Native American and indigenous studies, and other academic disciplines.

The Bristol site is nearly 80 years old and was never intended to support the needs of a modern-day museum. It does not have proper climate control technology and has inadequate storage space.
