Just days after a COVID-19 outbreak was reported at Kelowna’s Mountainview Village long term care home, a resident who was infected has died.

Interior Health announced yesterday, Dec. 3, that a man in his 80s succumbed to the virus. An outbreak was declared at the facility on Nov. 30. At that time, one staff member also tested positive. Now a second staff member has also tested positive.

This was the first resident of a long term care home in the Interior Health region to be diagnosed with COVID-19.

“We offer our condolences to the family and caregivers during this difficult time,” Interior Health President and CEO Susan Brown said in the news release. “Interior Health will continue working closely with Mountainview’s administration and staff as we combat COVID-19 together.”

She also called on the community to do more to stop the spread of COVID-19.

“We all have a role to play to stop the spread in our communities, and I’m asking everyone to stick close to home right now and keep to your household,” she said. “Limiting spread in our communities will help keep COVID-19 out of our long-term care facilities and help protect our most vulnerable.”

The original outbreak was limited to the second floor of both the east and west wings of the care home. The latest staff member worked for a short time on the first floor so that has been included in the outbreak.

There are now 609 active cases in the Interior Health region with 16 people in hospital and four in intensive care.

This was the fourth death in the health region since the pandemic started in January.
