OKANAGAN - After another record-setting day the Okanagan we may finally see a break in the blistering heat and it will likely bring some rain as well.
According to Environment Canada, about a dozen B.C. communities set records again Thursday, July 9, and once again many of the record-setters were in the Southern Interior, though the oldest record to fall was in Bella Coola (1895) and the biggest jump was in Port Hardy where the new record of 28 Celsius flew by the previous one by 5.2 degrees.
In the Interior, Blue River set a new record (35.5 C), as did Clearwater (38.2 C), Clinton (34.4 C), Kelowna (37.6 C), Merritt (37.1 C), Osoyoos (39.8 C), and Summerland (36.4 C.)
At 38.6 C Kamloops came close to a record, but was just shy of the highest temperature ever recorded by the weather office (38.9 C) while Vernon tied the record high at 36.7 C. Penticton, at 36.1 C yesterday, July 9, was more than a degree shy of breaking the record.
Today temperatures will be quite a bit cooler, but are still expected to reach just above 30 C throughout the region. There is also a chance of rain or thunderstorms today and Saturday. By Sunday the Okanagan can expect temperatures to drop to the mid-20s as rain settles over the area while Kamloops will drop to the mid-20s by Tuesday.
The next several days brings at least a chance of rain throughout the Thompson-Okanagan and for now a smoky air advisory remains in place.
