Famous Canadian painter Robert Bateman will be paying Penticton a visit this summer as the local art gallery hosts an exhibit of his work.

The exhibit “Unexpected Bateman” — which traces his artistic journey and highlights his contributions to the visual arts and environmental conservation — will be at the Penticton Art Gallery from July 5 to Sept. 24, according to a release from the art gallery.

The Toronto-born artist spend 20 years teaching high school and in 1976 decided to pursue painting full-time. He travelled with his wife Birgit to paint remote natural areas before settling on Salt Spring Island in 1985.

“Bateman’s art, which began in representational styles and transitioned through various phases including impressionism and cubism, eventually found its true expression in realism,” the release reads. “This style, capturing the essence of wildlife and nature, has brought him international acclaim.”

Bateman will participate in a public meet and greet on July 6 and is expected to talk about his experiences and inspirations.

“I have hope the exhibition will reframe Bateman’s legacy within contemporary art history, offering visitors a deeper understanding of his work and influence,” the exhibition’s curator Paul Crawford said in the release.
