Record breaking October weather for Kamloops, Okanagan

Kamloops, Kelowna and Vernon broke records for the warmest October ever with mean temperatures around 12 Celsius.

For Penticton, it was the second warmest October but tied with 2016 as the driest with 1 millimetre of rain.

Kamloops had its fourth driest October, Vernon its eleventh and Kelowna its sixteenth, according to Environment Canada meteorologist Derek Lee.

Kamloops had a mean October temperature of 11.9 C, breaking its previous record of 11.7 C. The normal temperature for the month is 8.5 C.

Kelowna recorded a mean of 12.1 C, breaking its old record of 11 C. The usual mean is 8.2 C.

For Vernon, this year’s mean temperature was 12 C, shattering the old record of 10.1 C. It’s usually 7.2 C in Vernon in October.

The previous records were all set in 2014.

The warm weather was a continuation of the series of high pressure systems that sat over much of B.C. since the summer, pushing the moisture to the northwest of the province, Lee said.

The warm dry fall, however, is about to end with temperatures dropping below freezing overnight some nights this week. Daytime highs early next week are expected to be around the freezing level and overnight lows closer to -5 C, especially on clear nights.

Not much precipitation is expected but there could be some snow flurries.

While the temperatures will be about 5 C below normal, the longer range forecast is for a warmer November than usual so temperatures could rise later in the month.
