The scene of a Kamloops house fire is now a major crimes investigation, but police won't say why.
A fire at a house on Seymour Street was spotted by Kamloops RCMP officers at around 5 a.m., April 6. The officers were attending a separate call.
They found no one inside the home and couldn't determine the cause.
“A subsequent investigation conducted by police and fire investigators concluded the fire’s cause as undeterminable at this time,” Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Crystal Evelyn said in a statement.
Police returned the next day with a forensic team, but won't say much about why, except to say it's part of a separate investigation outside of the Kamloops RCMP detachment.
“Currently, officers continue to secure the residence while members of the Southeast District Major Crime Unit advance a separate investigation associated to that address,” BC RCMP spokesperson Cpl. James Grandy said in a news release issued today, April 12.
The Southeast District major crimes unit has two ongoing investigations in the Kamloops area, including the 2022 murder of 18-year-old Jagraj Dhinsa and the more recent murder of Peter Casimir.
Dhinsa's body was found in a parking lot on the Tk'emlups te Secwepemc reserve, and there's been no updates on the investigation since last year.
Police said Casimir, however, was murdered some time this year.
The only information police have released about that investigation is that it's related to a bloody Ikea rug recently turned in to Barriere RCMP.
Police haven't said when they believe Casimir was killed, where his body was found or if he was found at all.
