KELOWNA - Police officers handed out almost 100 traffic tickets during a seven hour distracted driving enforcement campaign in Lake Country last week.
RCMP say six members working at two locations in Lake Country on Thursday, Feb. 16, handed out 50 violation tickets for distracted driving, and 45 speeding tickets to drivers who were going 25 kilometres per hour over the posted speed limit. One driver was given an immediate roadside prohibition for alcohol.
"It is astonishing to see that, despite the public outcry and resulting increase in fines and points, so many motorists are still driving while distracted by electronic devices," Cst. Steve Holmes says in a media release.
Tickets for distracted driving carry a fine of $368 and four demerit points.
According to ICBC, distracted driving is a leading cause of motor vehicle fatalities in the province.
