RCMP shot a suspect in West Kelowna who tried to hide in a portable toilet

The Independent Investigations Office of BC has launched a probe after West Kelowna RCMP shot a man yesterday.

Kelowna RCMP received a call about multiple gunshots at around 12 p.m. yesterday, Oct. 18, according to an RCMP press release.

After the initial call to police, West Kelowna Fire Department reported a car crash on Olalla Road and first responders saw a man exit the vehicle with a gun.

When police arrived on the scene they were informed the man had entered a portable toilet on Skyline Road, according to an IIO press release.

The Southeast District Emergency Response Team and a negotiator were called to the scene where they attempted to communicate with the suspect.

Police report the man did not comply with officers’ directions and an officer shot him.

The man was taken to a local hospital because of the “gunshot-related injury.” The IIO was quickly told about the situation and began their investigation.

The office is still investigating whether this police shooting was justified, but it says no further information about the shooting will be released during the investigation.

The condition of the suspect has not been released to the media.

The IIO is asking any person with relevant information or video footage of the incident to contact the Witness Line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form on the iiobc.ca website.

The IIO is the Independent civilian oversight agency of the police in BC. It investigates all officer-related incidents that result in serious harm or death, whether or not there is any allegation of wrongdoing.
