KAMLOOPS - RCMP in Kamloops have launched a crime prevention program aimed at people who don't lock their car doors.
Police officers, auxiliary RCMP officers and crime prevention volunteers will be making patrols throughout the city's neighbourhoods over the next month, according to an RCMP media release. Officers will be checking vehicles parked in residential areas for visible valuables and to see if they are locked.
If a vehicle is found unlocked or containing valuables, the registered owner of the vehicle will be contacted and provided with information about “locking out auto crime.”
"Some criminals will check hundreds of vehicle doors in an evening," Cpl. Jodie Shelkie says in the release. "What thieves are looking for is opportunity."
Shelkie says theft from vehicles adds pressure to the cost of insurance.
"Last year vehicle break-in claims cost $18 million," she says. "Taking thoughtful actions to prevent auto crime not only helps to control claims costs, but will help to make our communities and roads safer."
