OLIVER - RCMP in the South Okanagan teamed up with a local school district yesterday with an innovative way to catch drivers breaking traffic laws around school buses.

An officer boarded a school bus and rode it through the Oliver and Okanagan Falls area yesterday, May 22.

Const. David Fahlman was in radio contact with an unmarked police cruiser and along with 30 school students eager to help out, observed drivers failing to stop for the school bus.

Police in the South Okanagan plan to take advantage of several random ride-alongs in an effort to enforce driving laws that keep children safe, according to an RCMP media release.

Failure to stop for a school bus comes with a $368 fine and three demerit points.
