Kelowna RCMP are seeking the public's assistance to identify a suspect involved in a grandparent scam.

On Feb. 9, a female suspect met with an elderly woman in her residence to exchange money for a "bond," according to an RCMP media release.

The elderly woman reports that the suspect phoned her and identified herself as Sgt. Ashley Olsen, stating that her grandson was arrested and needed money to pay a bond immediately.

The suspect instructed the victim to withdraw a large sum of money telling her she would be refunded within 24 hours, RCMP said. She said she would pick up the money "for her convenience," and said so with a sense of urgency.

Hours after giving her the money, the suspect called back stating more circumstances to her grandson's arrest and demanding more money. Upon the victim's attempt at making another hefty withdrawal, a bank employee recognized she was being scammed which prevented the additional loss of funds.

The suspect is described as between the ages of 25 and 30, possibly of Latin descent with long, dark-coloured hair and strong eyebrows. She was wearing black coloured leggings, black boots and a denim-coloured shirt.

RCMP reminds the public that this type of fraud continues to occur and to be vigilant. If confronted with a similar scam, one should contact family members to confirm the alleged claims and then contact the police if there is still a concern.

All attempted frauds should be reported to the Canadian Anti-fraud Centre at 1-800-495-8501 as they link several crimes together in Canada and abroad helping with prevention and awareness efforts.

Anyone who recognizes this individual should contact the Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300 and give the file number 2024-7013.  An anonymous tip can also be made to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at their website here
