The body of a Vernon doctor presumed drowned in the Thompson River in Kamloops last month was recovered near the city’s airport this morning.
Officers and city firefighters were called to Aviation Way near the Kamloops airport at around 8:35 a.m. today, Aug. 11, in some logs near the float plane docks.
Dr. Michael Mthandazo, a family physician from Vernon, went for a swim with his son in the river at McArthur Island Park, July 30, and the current swept him away but not before he managed to save his son’s life.
A passerby attempted to help, but they could not reach him, and several boaters couldn't find him.
“The man’s identity has been verified and his family notified of his death,” Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Crystal Evelyn said in a media release issued today.
His death is not considered criminal in nature, RCMP said.
RCMP said no further information will be released by police out of respect for the family.
