RCMP explosive disposal team on scene in east Kamloops neighbourhood

The Lower Mainland's Explosive Device Unit is currently on scene at a Badger Drive home in Kamloops after a search warrant led to the discovery of a potential explosive.

KAMLOOPS - Kamloops RCMP have called in the explosive disposal unit after the search of a home in Dallas led to the discovery of a suspected explosive device.

It's the same home police obtained a search warrant for after it was broken into yesterday, Jan. 16.

Kamloops RCMP spokesperson Cpl. Jodi Shelkie says in a news release that police were called to a Badger Drive residence in the early morning hours yesterday. Neighbours reported a group of people yelling and kicking in the door.

The suspects had fled the scene and one homeowner received minor injuries, Shelkie says. While inside the home, police saw evidence of alleged criminal activity, and secured the home while requesting a search warrant. One person was arrested at the scene.

Yesterday evening, the search warrant was granted and officers began to execute it. While examining the home, police found what is believed to be an explosive device. The RCMP explosive disposal unit from the Lower Mainland was called to attend and neutralize the device, Shelkie says.

"We are very early in this investigation and understand the concern the community will have when hearing that a potential explosive device has been located," Shelkie says in the release. "We are committed to a safe and secure Kamloops and everyone's safety is always our first concern. As such, we felt it prudent at this time to rely on the experts from our explosive disposal unit to examine this scene and remedy any potential threat that may exist."

Once the home has been deemed safe, officers will continue the execution of the search warrant.
