RCMP emergency response team called to Kamloops three times in one day

Heavily-armed RCMP officers arrested three people in three separate Kamloops incidents within 24 hours.

The most arrest recent was Tuesday evening, but it was an incident spurred from a call the night before when a suspect allegedly pointed a firearm at a stranger.

Officers were first called to a scene up the Jamieson Creek Forest Service Road on the night of Sept. 30. Despite an extensive patrol of the area, Tk'emlups Rural RCMP couldn't find the suspect, according to an RCMP news release issued, Oct. 2.

The Emergency Response Team and an aerial surveillance team helped find the suspect at a camp up the remote road, where he was arrested around 5:30 p.m., Oct. 1.

“This was the third time the (Southeast District Emergency Response Team) responded to Kamloops in a 24-hour period, with two of the occurrences overlapping at the same time,” Kamloops RCMP Supt. Jeff Pelley said in the release.

Also on Tuesday afternoon, the team had responded to an assault in the Rose Hill area. The man was safely taken into custody around 2 p.m., according to the release.

Both those suspects are in custody and awaiting bail hearings.

The first of the three recent incidents was near the Halston Bridge, where a man was taken into custody under the Mental Health Act. Police believed the person was in possession of a firearm and was at risk of self harm.

The emergency response team has officers across the region who are trained to respond to high-risk scenarios.

“The resolve and professionalism of our frontline officers, (Emergency Response Team), and support units provided an exceptional response that allowed for comprehensive investigations and swift action, with the interest of public safety remaining at the forefront,” Supt. Pelley said in the release. “The tireless efforts of those who attended these high-risk and stressful situations are greatly appreciated in their attempts to help safeguard our communities.”
