KELOWNA - A three-hour standoff with a distraught man in a Kelowna home came to a peaceful end yesterday afternoon.

RCMP say officers were called at about 2:17 p.m., May 30, to reports of a very distraught 32-year-old man inside his Rutland home.

Police decided to evacuate the surrounding homes as a precautionary measure.

“After nearly three hours, RCMP negotiators successfully encouraged the man to safely exit his residence where he was apprehended by members of the Southeast District Emergency Response Team without further incident,” Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey says in a media release. “The man was medically examined, as a precaution only, by paramedics at the scene and was transported to hospital for further assessment."

— This story was updated at 10:46 a.m. Wednesday, May 31, 2017 to say the standoff had ended peacefully.
