Several arrests have been made and a quantity of illegal drugs seized after RCMP targeted drug dealers who sell to the homeless population in downtown Kelowna.

Concerned residents, tourists and business owners brought the problem, and the associated safety concerns, to the attention of police.

Members of the detachment’s community safety unit wrapped up the operation, Nov. 5, according to an RCMP media release issued, Nov. 12.

RCMP didn’t say how many suspects were arrested or what drugs were seized

The release said there were “multiple” arrests and thousands of “doses” seized. Police guess that that the doses of the drug were worth $27,000 on the street.

“Our goal with this project was to make a meaningful impact toward safeguarding the downtown community from the harmful impacts of illicit drug activities in hopes that this effort will contribute to both a reduction in social disorder and, most importantly, the overdose incidents in the downtown area,” RCMP Sgt. Scott Powrie said in the release.

“Expect more enforcement to come.”
