RCMP have a batch of puppies in need of names and is asking for help.

Until March 17, young people are encouraged to enter the RCMP’s 2022 Name the Puppy Contest to help find names for 13 new German shepherd puppies, any one of which could end up policing in Kamloops or the Okanagan someday.

In 2019, a student from Rayleigh was one of 13 winners after his suggested name of ‘Marlow’ was chosen, said Cpl. Steve Prior, a Kamloops RCMP dog handler, in a press release.

Prior’s current police dog partner is Neeka but he has also worked with police dog Reiko, which starts with the same letter as this year’s contest names.

Children are encouraged to be original and imaginative in finding names, but also reminded to pick ones suitable for working police dogs.

Although there can be only 13 winners, names not selected for the contest will be considered for other puppies born during the year, RCMP said.

Winning names will be chosen by the staff at the Police Dog Service Training Centre staff in Innisfail, Alta. A draw will determine the winning entry in the event of multiple submissions of the same puppy name.

The children whose names are selected will each receive a laminated 8 by 10-inch photo of the pup they name, a plush dog named Justice and an RCMP water bottle.

Names must begin with the letter R, be no more than nine letters and have one or two syllables.

Contestants must be 4 to 14 years old and only one entry per child is allowed. Entries must be received by March 17.

Enter the contest by visiting the RCMP's website here.
