RCMP ask for help to identify man whose body was found near Merritt in 2019

B.C. RCMP released this composite sketch of a man whose body was found near Merritt, B.C. in September 2019.

A man's body recovered near Merritt two years ago remains unidentified and police are looking to the public for assistance.

Although the body was discovered in September 2019, the man might have been dead for multiple years given the extent of the body's decomposition, according to a news release from Southeast District RCMP.

Police have now released a sketch of what they believe the man looked like and are looking to the public to help identify him.

"Despite all efforts by investigators through DNA analysis and dental comparisons, combined with other investigative avenues, an identity for the deceased has not yet been established," B.C. RCMP spokesperson Janelle Shoihet said in the release.

Southeast District major crimes unit is in charge of the investigation, with the suspicion that there was criminality involved with his sudden death.

"Given the geographical location of the remains, investigators are mindful that the deceased may not be a resident of the surrounding area," the release reads, adding that the man could have been a Lower Mainland or Alberta resident.

Police describe the man as light-skinned and possibly of European decent. He was between 20 and 50 years of age, standing about 6'2" and weighing 220 lbs.

According to RCMP, he had a muscular build at the time of his death, with straight brown hair, brown facial hair and no tattoos or piercings were found.

When his body was found, he had a grey T-shirt and a maroon coloured zip-up hoodie.

Anyone with information can call the Southeast District major crimes unit at 1-877-987-8477.
