The RCMP Southeast District Emergency Response Team was deployed to Grand Forks to assist with the apprehension of an emotionally distraught woman in her residence this past weekend.

Officers arrived at the scene at around 7:45 p.m. Saturday, March 28, to find a distraught 43-year-old woman who they believed had a firearm, according to an RCMP media release. The woman refused to exit her home and allegedly threatened violence towards the responding officers.

The Southeast District Containment Team closed a portion of 68 Avenue in Grand Forks to all traffic and evacuated approximately 15 residents from a portion of the apartment building for their safety during the negotiations with the woman.

They were assisted on the scene by the Emergency Response Team and specially trained RCMP Crisis Negotiators.

"Despite all efforts to de-escalate the situation, and have the woman exit her home, tactically trained members were required to breach the door to her residence in order to apprehend her," RCMP Southeast District Media Relations Officer Cpl. Jesse O’Donaghey said in the release.

The woman was transported to hospital for full medical assessment.

Temporarily evacuated residents were allowed to return to their homes at approximately 6 a.m.
